Corridor of Uncertain Tea - TGCC vs HPCC
It was a fine day for cricket and our first face-off with the leather ball after a brief hiatus. We were playing a friendly match against HPCC, hoping to get some much awaited practice out in the middle. The ground was in bad condition, partly due to some incessant rain past couple of weeks and also lack of maintenance, but was still good enough to play.
HPCC team arrived on time at 10 30 am, while we were still waiting for most of our team members to join us at the ground. We practiced at the nets a bit and then had a brief catching session to warm up and loosen our tight muscles. When it was time for the toss, Prashant offered to captain the team and everyone readily agreed and he was on board quickly.
We won the toss and decided to bat, to have our batsmen spend some time in the middle and play without any pressure of chasing a target.
Sanjay was sent in to open the innings with our regular opener Mayur and he played smoothly, hitting 2 sixes on the way to his 25 runs. Mayur was at his usual best, and carted out another fifty, although he had his share of luck with some dropped catches. He played an anchor’s role with some patient and mature batting on a pitch which was very slow and unpredictable. He raised the tempo when acceleration was needed, and hit some glorious shots which were a treat to watch. In an interesting move by the captain, Sunny was promoted up the order and was sent in at 1st down and boy did he deliver! He was scratchy initially, but once he got going, it was all class from there on. We witnessed history being created when Sunny finished with an unbeaten 50 (a rare feet which might never be repeated ;)). I was next in, and came back without troubling the scorers. Another innovative move by the captain was to go against the conventional wisdom and send Biv up the order, when he sensed some fireworks were needed. The move worked big time as Biv and Sunny added 60 odd runs in the last 6 overs. The captain’s faith in Biv paid off as he did some quick scoring and followed Sehwag’s simple rule: the ball is supposed to live outside the boundary, and he sent it there- twice – aerial route). We finished off with a competitive total of 179 runs from our allotted quote of 30 overs.
We started our bowling with the two best bowlers on our side – Biv and Rohan. They bowled superbly, especially Rohan who picked up 3 quick wickets and set up the pace of the game. All the bowlers chipped in with useful spells and picking up wickets at regular intervals (Biv 1, Rahul M 2, Mayur 1, Amar 1, Abhimanyu 1 and Parth 1).
A special mention about Mayur and Biv’s keeping, as they were terrific behind the wickets. Our fielding was also good, with not many misfields, although Sunny did manage to grass a simple chance off my bowling.
Overall a great team effort from our team, and I hope we will carry this momentum forward into the league matches.
